2004 Strategic Initiatives

The Fund's sponsors are pleased to announce their continued commitment to expand the knowledge of the sector and to create “economies of scale” for allocation of limited resources. Throughout 2004, the Nonprofit Management Fund will fulfill its primary function of making grants to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations, make grants through a new program to strengthen organizations serving the Latino community, and continue to provide learning opportunities for Directors of nonprofit Boards.

Initiatives

  • Launch an Institute to train consultants to conduct diagnostic clinics
  • Conduct diagnostic clinics of local nonprofits
  • Promote and enhance resources for nonprofit Boards of Directors
  • Offer activities to increase the capacity of Latino organizations and to develop leadership within the Latino community

For the most part, these options emphasize education and training, along with experiential learning, as methods to build organizational capacity. They are designed to have a significant impact on nonprofit organizations of varying types, sizes and structures in the greater Milwaukee area. However, the greatest emphasis is placed on organizations that are eligible to apply for a grant from the Nonprofit Management Fund.

Accurate assessment of a problem is critical to its resolution. Based on an application, diagnostic clinics are awarded to aid organizations in identifying their management and governance strengths and weaknesses. In 2004, the Fund will organize another Institute to train six practicing consultants how to conduct diagnostic clinics.

The differences between nonprofit organizations and for-profit corporations are many. However, one critical advantage to the nonprofit status can be the involvement of the Board of Directors, representing a wealth of financial, program and personal resources. The focus on “Board Orientation And Resource Development” is an effort to have a demonstrable impact on nonprofit Boards through the development of recruitment, placement, training and other activities.

Continuing for the next year, the funding partners are making a significant commitment to increase the capacity of Latino-led organizations and to further leadership development within the Latino community. In partnership with Hispanics In Philanthropy, the Funders’ Collaborative for Strong Latino Communities, will organize a series of educational activities and make several types of grants to eligible organizations.
