On November 12-14,
2000, over 700 nonprofit Board leaders from across the country participated
in a leadership forum dedicated to nonprofit governance. The Forum
was the eighth annual conference sponsored by the National Center
for Nonprofit Boards.
“Transforming the
Board”

Washington, D.C.
The
Nonprofit Management Fund hosted a delegation of 7 Board officers
who represent Milwaukee’s nonprofit Boards. Pat Wyzbinski, Advisor
to the Fund, organized the trip as part of the Fund’s B.O.A.R.D.
Initiative. As a follow-up activity to the conference, the Fund

A few comments from those
who attended. . .
“The conference served to affirm
my beliefs in the responsibilities and roles of nonprofit boards
and inspired me to become better acquainted with the potential
directions and transformations an individual board can choose.”
Bob Pietrykowski,
Director
La Farge Lifelong Learning Institute, Inc.
“As a new Board President, I came
away from the conference feeling both encouraged and inspired.
Encouraged because some of my current techniques were validated;
inspired because I learned so much more.”
Linda C. Austin,
President
Nonprofit Center
of Milwaukee
“One observation that I’d like
to make is about the importance of doing strategic thinking and
discussing at every board meeting rather than waiting for a board
retreat. We had just finished a successful retreat with our board
when I attended the conference. It became clear to me that we
could almost have a mini-retreat at every board meeting if we
adjusted our agenda and posed one or two envisioning questions.
When we engage in these types of discussions, the energy level,
enthusiasm and interest shown by our board members is incredible.”
Linda Rounseville,
President
Women’s Center
of Waukesha
“I found the National
Leadership Forum to be a great opportunity to meet my needs for
becoming better educated about organizational and board-related
issues while being able to meet and converse with dedicated individuals
who volunteer in board roles for all types of nonprofit organizations
around the world.”
Stephen Adams,
Chairperson
North Avenue
Community Development Corporation
“The conference served
as a very helpful guide to making board meetings more effective,
especially in the areas of identifying the role of directors and
the critical issues that need to be focused upon.”
Larry Clancy,
Vice President
BASICS in Milwaukee
Bob Pietrykowski also
had another thoughtful comment.
“As a member of La Farge Lifelong
Institute, Inc. Board of Directors, a statement made by one of
the conference speakers resonated with me because I believe it
highlighted one of La Farge’s strongest assets. The statement
pertained to the value of an organization or program’s “brand”:
‘An ounce of trust (established by an organization) is worth a
ton of information (about that organization).’”
