"Dialogues
with Directors"
Results
On
24 January 2001, 41 participants attended the Nonprofit Management
Fund's B.O.A.R.D. Initiative "Dialogues with Directors". Seven
presenters representing their organization's Boards discussed
what they learned at National Leadership Forum in November 2000
in Washington D.C. that was sponsored by the National Center for
Nonprofit Boards.
Here
are a few words of wisdom from the presenters.
| "Boards
don't read or remember. This is particularly improtant
for staff to take into consideration when planning Board
meetings." |
-
Steve Adams, North Avenue CDC
"It
is important to spend 80 % of your Board's time on
what should happen next, planning for the future,
rather than reporting on the past."
-
Linda Rounseville, Women's Center of Waukesha
"Address
three critical issues at regular Board meetings, but
come together once a year for a retreat to discuss
the more complex or difficult issues."
-
Gwen Jackson, Red Cross of Greater Milwaukee
"In
serving the Board, it is important to set goals, monitor
their outcomes, and have fun."
-
Linda Austin, Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee
"It's
vital to have Board meetings that make a difference.
Send necessary materials in advance, and consider
using a consent agenda"
-
Larry Clancy, BASICS of Milwaukee
"Boards
are more relevant than ever before. Their work is
critical to the success of an organization."
-
Bob Pietrykowski, La Farge Lifelong Institute
"Even
though you've been around for a while, you can still
learn. There is always something new and relevant
to learn and apply at every organization."
-
Joe White, Modjeska Theatre Company
