IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BOARDSOURCE

GOAL:
- "To
increase the governance capacity of nonprofits in metropolitan
Milwaukee, by providing training, information, and support for
local Boards, individual directors, and the executive staff..."
TRAINING
ACTIVITIES:
In
2002, three workshops were conducted by staff from BoardSource,
formerly the National Center for Nonprofit Boards. Each session
was held on a weekday evening from 4:00-8:00 pm.
- Orientation
Express:
Two-hour
sessions covering Board basics for new Directors as well as for
veteran Directors looking for a refresher course. Each session
cost $30 and included: presentation, manual and a meal.

- Foundation
Trustee Leadership Reception: In partnership with the Donors
Forum, and following a wine and hors d'oeurves reception, we hosted
a discussion on the "Foundation Board of the 21st Century" at
the Villa Terrace on 30 May 2002. The evening included a presentation
by Sandy Hughes and a reflector panel with a community, corporate,
and family foundation representative.
- BoardSource
Workshops: Three, four-hour evening sessions were provided
by consultants from BoardSource (formerly National Center for
Nonprofit Boards). Each session cost $25 and included: dinner,
presentation and materials.
- Building
a Better Board for the Future - in Spanish; with up to 5 publications
in English/Spanish including: Ten Basic Responsibilities of
Nonprofit Boards; Chair's Role in Leading the Board; How to
Govern More and Manage Less, etc.
- The
Board Chair/CEO Partnership - encouraging these teams to attend
together.
- The
Board's Relationship to Staff, Funders and the Community -
encouraging Chair/CEO team to attend.
- National
Leadership Forum: "Boards Building Community" on 17 - 18 November
2002, in Washington, D.C. Through a competitive application process,
we selected 4-5 Chair/CEO teams to attend the Forum. In exchange,
these teams shared what they learned with other Board Directors
and Executive Directors in a public forum in January 2003.
